SIGNED --BUT NOT TO A SPECIFIC PERSON -- "WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF WOODROW WILSON PRINCETON 1 APRIL, 1908" AS PRESIDENT OF PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, ALMOST 3 YEARS BEFORE HE BECAME GOVERNOR OF NEW JERSEY IN JANUARY OF 1911. The flowing inscription, written in Wilson's elegant script, takes up the upper third of the front free endpaper. A sound, very attractive copy to boot of this 1898 early --but not 1st-- edition. Tight and VG+ in its mustard cloth, with decorative gilt-titling and bordering along the front panel and spine. Notable darkening to the spine and a degree of mild spotting at the rear panel. Internally tight and quite sharp, other than a neat inscription from husband to wife (H.A. Gunnison to Effie Gunnison) at the 3rd blank recto. Almost 70 crisp black-and-white illustrations throughout (photos, maps and renderings) complementing Wilson's text. Thick octavo, top-edge gilt, deckled fore and bottom-edges. One of the key Washington biographies, well over a century later still considered an iconic portrait of the maiden President by the 28th President-to-be. Especially uncommon signed. Very Good +.
