New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1955. Cloth. The 1955 stated 1st edition of Flannery O'Connor's 2nd published book, following the triumph of "Wise Blood". A "starter" copy to be sure, a well-priced one, but a copy nonetheless that shows undeniable wear. Lacking the original dustjacket and showing abrading --in the form of small white markings-- along the rear panel, the rear fore-edge and, less so, along the spine. There's also a bit of water damage and spotting at the rear endsheets and the rear pastedown. Otherwise clean, with no noteworthy additional markings and no internal writing of any kind. A Good+/VG- copy, still somewhat presentable and, in spite of its flaws, secure in its position as a significant literary first edition. Very Good -. Item #25870
