Vintage Photograph of Oscar of the Waldorf-Astoria SIGNED
The New York Times Studios, c. 1920s. Photograph. A wonderful 1920s New York item, an unusually large portrait (a vintage silver gelatin print) of the legendary maitre d' and host of the Waldorf-Astoria, Oscar Tschirky (1866-1943). Better known throughout the world as "Oscar of the Waldorf", Tschirky not only became, soon after its 1893 opening, the face of the Waldorf-Astoria, he also became one of the faces of Gilded-Age New York. This photograph carries the additional distinction of having been taken at The New York Times Studios (suggesting it may have been the photograph of choice used by the NYT whenever it referenced Oscar) AND, FURTHERMORE, IS WARMLY INSCRIBED IN OSCAR'S HAND (TO HIS FRIEND WILLIAM HAMILTON) in the matting, just below the photograph. The photo measures 7 1/4" wide x 9" tall and is bright and crisp, with its original silver tones still visible. The original printed beige matting and wooden frame (which shows a bit of chippng at its base) are very presentable and well-preserved as well. Very Good +. Item #25052
