Item #20152 A Woman's War Record 1861-1865. Septima M. Collis.

A Woman's War Record 1861-1865

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1889. Cloth. The uncommon 1889 1st edition of this memoir of the Civil War experiences of Septima Collis (1842-1917), wife of Union General Charles Collis. "Despite her Southern sympathies, Collis supported her husband and accompanied him throughout the war. Her memoir recounts her experiences at the front lines as well as social life away from camp, including the time she met President Abraham Lincoln. Of particular note are her struggles to reconcile being the sister of a Confederate soldier and the wife of a Union officer" (Duke University Libraries). Solid and VG in its gilt-decorated and titled front panel. Very light abrading along the mid-spine, as well as one small, clear piece of tape. Also a touch of light wear to the spine ends. Strill though, very presentable and, internally, clean as could be, with no writing or markings of any kind. 12mo, original floral pastedowns and endsheets. Very Good +. Item #20152
