Item #19858 May Day New Haven

May Day New Haven

New Haven: View from the Bottom/Yale Strike News/Committee to Defend the Panthers, 1970. Newspaper. A clean, very well-preserved copy of this uncommon single-issue newspaper --"an information newspaper"-- published in advance of the May Day rally (May 1-3, 1970), held at the New Haven Green. Published jointly by "View from the Bottom", "Yale Strike News" and "Committee to Defend the Panthers", "May Day New Haven" was designed to offer medical, legal and housing information (as well as a schedule, a map and very strong pro-Rally commentary), all in the lead-up to what was expected to be a major anti-war and anti-police gathering. The arrest and detaining by the New Haven police of Bobby Seale and 7 other Black Panthers was also a major reason, if not the single most compelling rallying cry-- behind the demonstration. This copy shows one clean, even fold (as issued) but no wear or soiling to speak of. Crisp and Near Fine. An impressive piece of poilitical ephemera, centering on the role of both New Haven and Yale in response to the activism of the 60s and early 70s. Near Fine. Item #19858
