The Annals of Tennis
London: "The Field" Office, 1878. Decorative Cloth. The 1878 1st edition of "the first attempt at a general history and description of tennis". Also called "the most important book on real tennis published in the 19th century", Marshall's seminal history of the sport remains widely viewed as the earliest major study. A clean, well-preserved copy to boot, in its original russet cloth, with gilt-bordering, flourishes and design to the front panel and matching blindstamping to the rear panel. Light wear at the front outer hinge (which is still perfectly sturdy), a touch of very mild bubbling along the front panel's fore-edge. Inner hinges professionally, attractively reinforced. Quarto, 45 plates (largely engravings) complementing Marshall's text. Very Good +. Item #21861
