New AKARI Light Sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (Brochures and 1972 Price Sheets

Ephemera. Two Noguchi brochures (with additional 1972 price sheets) detailing the iconic lamps designed by legendary sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). One brochure with photos in black-and-white, the other with sketches and instructions for installing the Ceiling Akari. Inspired by a 1951 trip to Gifu, Japan, which was known for its handmade lanterns, Noguchi began playing with possibilites of washi paper stretched on a bamboo or metal frame. He saw them as “elegant people’s art” and a way to “bring sculpture into a more direct involvement with the common experiences of living”. All the peices (the 2 brochures and the 2 price lists) are in clean, Near Fine condition. Near Fine. Item #21583
