How the Other Half Lives (With a Tipped-In Jacob Riis Letter) SIGNED

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. Pictorial boards. A solid, very presentable copy of the 1890 1st edition of this timeless examination of poverty in mid to late 1880s New York. The correct 1st edition, in its pictorial boards and with both the matching 1890 dates to the title and copyright pages, and "Trow's Printing and Bookbinding Company, New York" at the foot of the copyright page. Surprisingly clean and tight given its age, with bright boards and crisp gilt-titling along the spine. Easily VG to VG+, with very light scuffing and a bit of rubbing along the rear panel. The signatrure and New Jersey address of an Elizabeth Brown appears at the top of the front free endpaper. Just below this, A 1 PG. HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM JACOB RIIS TO "MY DEAR MS BROWN" --THE PRESUMED ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS COPY-- HAS BEEN NEATLY TIPPED-IN. 12mo, also includes a booklet called "Jacob A. Riis: A Sketch of His Life and Work" neatly glued onto the rear pastedown. The booklet was published by Macmillan and was intended more than anything to familiarize the reader with the greater body of Jacob Riis's works. A very impressive copy, uncommon as such. Very Good +. Item #21266
