Persuasion. Jane Austen.

Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1882. 1/4 leather. Uncommon 1882 French edition of Jane Austen's "Persuasion", translated from its original English by Mme. Letorsay. Bound in a contemporary-to-the-period 1/4 leather over marbled boards. Rubbing to the boards, wear along the tips, the leather on the spine dry and very slightly cracked. Light, forgiveable foxing as well to the preliminaries and, intermittently, to the text. Still though, solidly VG and very presentable. The British Library shows a number of holdings of the original translations into French of Austen's work but, curiously, does not show an original French edition of "Persuasion". It has in its holdings the 1st French editions of "Mansfield Park" (1816), "Sense and Sensibility" (also 1816), "Northanger Abbey" (1824) and a very early (1822), though not a 1st, French edition of "Pride and Prejudice". Based on this information alone, it's clear that the 1882 copy here offered is not the 1st French edition, though it's certainly very early and scarce as such. Very Good. Item #18860
