The 1834 1st edition of this renowned study of Egyptian Mummies, with 13 full-page plates complementing Pettigrew's text. Solid and Good+ to VG- in its original light-brown boards, with a professionally linen-rebacked spine and with light, forgiveable creases and spotting to the panels. Internally, mild, intermittent foxing but still quite clean, except for the last dozen or so pages (the plates), which show light water-staining along their upper right corners. Several of the plates (not the hand-colored ones) have been lightly affected. Tall quarto, chapters include "On Mummy as a Drug", "On Egyptian Tombs", "On Embalming", "On the Bandages", "On the Papyri Manuscripts", "On the Sacred Animals Embalmed by the Egyptians", "On the Guanches --the Mummies of Peru--the Desiccated Bodies at Palermo--the Burman Embalmings", etc. 10 of the 13 plates illustrated by George Cruikshank, 4 of them hand-colored.
