The Tumult and the Shouting: My Life in Sport (A Remarkable Association Copy)

New York: A.S. Barnes & Company, 1954. Cloth. A one-of-a-kind copy of the 1954 1st edition, with a galaxy of signatures of some of Grantland Rice's closest friends. The signatures were almost all certainly gotten by a former owner of this copy at "The Grantland Rice Memorial Dinner", held on Sunday, October 31st, 1954 at Toots Shor's legendary New York restaurant, where a large gathering had assembled to honor the great sportswriter himself (who had passed away roughly 4 months earlier) and to formally launch "The Grantland Rice Award", given to college football's annual National Champion. This copy is signed (on the front pastedown and on the following 3 pages) by 1) The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame (Elmer Layden, Jim Crowley, Don Miller and Harry Stuhldreher); 2) Gene Tunney; 3) Jack Dempsey; 4) Johnny Weissmuller; 5) Hank Greenberg; 6) Jackie Gleason; 7) Ford Frick (Commissioner of Baseball); 8) Red Smith; 9) Frankie Frisch (Baeball hall-of-famer); 10) Rube Goldberg; 11) Toots Shor; 12) Eddie Arcaro; 13) Ken Strong (NFL hall-of-famer); 14) Ben Fairless (President of U.S. Steel); 15) Frank Hogan (District Attorney of New York); 16) Herman Hickman (NFL player, head coach at Yale); 17) Vincent Richards (#2 ranked tennis player in the world); 18) John Kieran (journalist and naturalist); 19) Bruce Barton (author and New York Congressman); 20) Bernard Gimbel (President of Gimbel's Department Store); 21) Eddie Eagan (to this day the only person to win a gold medal at both the Summer and Winter Olympics); 22) Herbert Bayard Swope (journalist and intimate of the Algonqun Round Table). And a handful of other signatures (no doubt interesting) this bookseller is unable to make out. In addition, this is a solid, very presentable copy. Clean and VG+ (light rubbing to the gilt-titling along the spine) in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ dustjacket, with very light creasing --and just a touch of chipping-- along the panel edges. Octavo, very scarce as such, with this astounding array of signatures, all by friends and admirers of the formidable Grantland Rice. Very Good + / Very Good +. Item #17688
