Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres par Leurs Talens, Leur Rang ou Leur Beaute (Complete with 70 Lovely Hand-Colored Plates)

Paris: L'Imprimerie de Crapelet, Boulevard Montmartre, 1827. Louis Marie Lante and George-Jacques Gatine. Decorative Cloth. The 1827 1st edition, in its original decorative dark-green cloth, with brilliant and intricate gilt (and blindstamped) design at the panels and the spine. Light wear along the spine ends and the outer hinges. The boards do show some looseness but are hanging firm, the binding still solid and strong. Tight and easily VG. And internally, free of any writing or overt marks or scuffs. All 70 plates have remained uniformly bright and clean, and in each case their facing tissue guards are still present, as is the accompanying text (captions and in many cases descriptions). The 70 full-page, lavish portraits were drawn by M. Lante and engraved and hand-colored by M. Gatine. The result is a dramatic, hand-colored demonstration of feminine beauty and costume, as personified by European royalty thru the centuries (up thru the early 19th century). Folio, all edges gilt. Very Good. Item #17212
