The Writings and Speeches of Daniel Webster: The "Autograph Edition" (Complete in 18 Volumes)

Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1903. Three-Quarter Leather. A handsome example of the 1903 "Autograph edition" of "The Writings and Speeches of Daniel Webster". 1 of only 30 sets issued bound in the publisher's 3/4 red morocco AND INCLUDING A 3 PG. HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM DANIEL WEBSTER (in this case dated Nov. 6th, 1850), AND HOUSED IN ITS ORIGINAL ENVELOPE, which is pasted onto the first blank endpaper. The set itself has held up very nicely and all 18 volumes are altogerther clean and attractive. Each octavo volume is crisp and Near Fine, with bright gilt rule and lettering along its spine. And each uniform volume has 5 raised bands and 6 gilt-decorated compartments. All top-edges gilt as well. Curiously, even though this set states on its limitation page that this is the "National Edition" and is numbered 136 of 1,050 copies, we know that this is inaccurate and that in point of fact this is 1 of the 30 "Autograph Edition" sets, made unmistakable by its fine leather binding and, as importantly, the tipped-in handwritten letter by Daniel Webster. An uncommon error from Little, Brown in Boston. Collectible; Fine. Item #10046
