Why? A Story of Great Longing SIGNED

Stockholm: Svenska Tryckeriaktiebolaget, 1923. Original wraps. SIGNED "MARIE" in year-of-publication along the foot of the title page. A solid copy to boot of the 1923 1st edition of this uncommon, wild tale by Marie Queen of Roumania, grandaughter to Queen Victoria and Roumania's last Queen. Ascending to the throne in 1914, King Ferdinand and his wife Queen Marie played an important role in the Great War and, at Marie's urging, Ferdinand declared war on Germany in 1916. Marie, in spite of the time she devoted during her tenure to both diplomacy and volunteer work, also found the time to write fiction and "Why? A Story of Great Longing" is probably her best-known work apart from her autobiography, "The Story of My Life". This 1923 novel features, incredibly, a vampire named "Dalva" and fables and parables along the way on the journey to answer the eternal question "Why?" This copy is tight and VG- to VG in its printed beige wrappers, with light chipping and creasing along the panel edges, mild chipping and creasing at the spine and light spotting to the panels. Still though, solid and very presentable. Octavo, 194 pgs. Undoubtedly one of the most unusual titles in the body of "Royal" literature. Very Good -. Item #17154
