Tropic of Cancer
Henry Miller
New York: MEDVSA, 1940. The uncommon 1940 pirated (and correct 1st) American edition. SIGNED AND DATED BY HENRY MILLER on the front free endaper. Probably a printer's proof copy as well (see below). VG in its light green cloth, with very mild wear at the spine ends and a bit of tenderness to the inner hinges (which are still sturdy though). Octavo, 323 pgs. Taped onto the front pastedown is a typed, 1 paragraph explanation of this copy: "This is a copy of the first American edition of 'Tropic of Cancer' as pirated from the earlier French editions. The print run was ordered by Ben Abramson of the Argue Bookstore, Chicago and was carried out by Nat. Roth of the Aries Press (formerly Falcon Press) of Chicago. 'New York--MEDVSA' is fictitious. This copy was the persoanl property of Mr. Roth and, since chapter heads are lacking, is doubtless a printers proof". Housed in a custom-made box, with folding chemise. (Item ID: 7254)
